Yard and Garden Green Promises

On Mon Oct 31 2011, megooney promised:

I promise to grow my own vegetable garden next Spring.

Next Spring I'm going to try my hand at gardening. I'd like to grow bell peppers, onion, garlic, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers.

Obstacles: I've never grown a thing in my life. I'm not even sure that my yard gets the right amount of sun or anything. But, I'm going to try!

I seek out and purchase organic and sustainably produced products. I want to help make the Earth a better place for our children and future generations.

I buy only organic and GMO-free products because I want to reduce the amount of chemicals that are building up and hurting the planet. I have a chemical free lawn, with seven chickens and my own organic garden. With help from our town's environmental commission, I started a green book club in our community. I believe that buying/growing local is the answer.

Obstacles: Getting members to the book club! It's tough to find organic corn-on-the-cob. Will have to grow my own next year!

I will start and actively use a compost pile

I have so many fall leaves still in my beds. I'll make a space to let them compost, and put a plan in place to regularly add kitchen scraps to the pile.

Obstacles: Having to take the scraps downstairs through the basement, not to mention finding the time to clean out the beds.

I will try the methods in "Weedless Gardening"

Weeds are rampant throughout my yard, and I hate the thought of spraying chemicals all over the place. Just reading the synopsis and a few preview pages of this book made me want to give it a shot, and maybe enjoy working in the garden more.

Obstacles: I need to get the book, and find a source for newspapers.

Get a vermicompost setup going

We need to get more use out of our winter compostables now that our pile is covered in too much snow.

Obstacles: Don't want the wormies in the house and it's a bit too cold in our garage so I need to see how low we can go with the little critters.

Get this (garden) party started

Since our move, we had to abandon our old organic garden plot and need to start anew, with a much bigger space allocated to organic fruits and veggies.

Obstacles: need to set up an indoor incubation area first; need more TP tubes for seed starter pots; so many seed choices, so little time.

Goal Date: 3/1/2008 Percent Complete: 100%
